How to Wash Your Engine at a Car Wash

Materials You’ll Need

  • Engine degreaser
  • Hose
  • Bucket
  • Soft-bristled brush
  • Rags

Instructions

  1. Park your car in a shaded area. This will help prevent the engine from overheating and causing the degreaser to dry too quickly.
  2. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool. You don’t want to spray degreaser on a hot engine, as it can cause the degreaser to evaporate and become ineffective.
  3. Apply engine degreaser to the engine. Use a generous amount of degreaser, and be sure to cover all of the surfaces of the engine, including the top, bottom, and sides.
  4. Let the degreaser sit for 10-15 minutes. This will give the degreaser time to break down the dirt and grease on the engine.
  5. Rinse the engine with water. Use a hose to rinse the engine thoroughly, removing all of the degreaser and dirt.
  6. Brush the engine with a soft-bristled brush. This will help to remove any remaining dirt or grease from the engine.
  7. Rinse the engine again with water. Rinse the engine thoroughly until all of the suds are gone.
  8. Dry the engine with rags. Use clean rags to dry the engine, removing all of the water. Be sure to dry all of the surfaces of the engine, including the top, bottom, and sides.

Tips

  • If your engine is very dirty, you may need to repeat steps 3-7.
  • Be careful not to get degreaser on the paint of your car.
  • Dispose of the degreaser and water according to your local regulations.
