## How to Remove the Engine from a Car
Removing an engine from a car is a big job, but it’s not impossible. With the right tools and a little bit of know-how, you can do it yourself.
**Tools You’ll Need**
* Floor jack
* Jack stands
* Socket wrench set
* Screwdriver set
* Pliers
* Drain pan
* Funnel
**Safety Precautions**
* Before you start, make sure the car is parked on a level surface and the parking brake is engaged.
* Disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical shorts.
* Allow the engine to cool down before you start working on it.
* Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself from sharp edges and flying debris.
## Step 1: Drain the Fluids
Before you can remove the engine, you need to drain the fluids. This includes the oil, coolant, and transmission fluid.
* **Oil:** Place a drain pan under the oil pan and remove the drain plug. Allow the oil to drain completely.
* **Coolant:** Locate the radiator drain plug and open it. Allow the coolant to drain into a drain pan.
* **Transmission fluid:** Locate the transmission drain plug and open it. Allow the transmission fluid to drain into a drain pan.
## Step 2: Remove the Accessories
Once the fluids are drained, you can start removing the accessories from the engine. This includes the alternator, power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, and any other accessories that are attached to the engine.
* **Unplug the electrical connectors:** Disconnect any electrical connectors that are attached to the accessories.
* **Remove the bolts:** Remove the bolts that are holding the accessories in place.
* **Remove the accessories:** Carefully remove the accessories from the engine.
## Step 3: Remove the Intake and Exhaust Manifolds
The next step is to remove the intake and exhaust manifolds.
* **Intake manifold:** Unbolt the intake manifold from the engine. Be careful not to damage the gaskets.
* **Exhaust manifold:** Unbolt the exhaust manifold from the engine. Be careful not to damage the gaskets.
## Step 4: Remove the Cylinder Heads
Once the intake and exhaust manifolds are removed, you can remove the cylinder heads.
* **Unbolt the cylinder heads:** Unbolt the cylinder heads from the engine block. Be careful not to damage the gaskets.
* **Remove the cylinder heads:** Carefully remove the cylinder heads from the engine block.
## Step 5: Remove the Timing Chain or Belt
If your engine has a timing chain or belt, you will need to remove it before you can remove the engine.
* **Timing chain:** Use a chain wrench to remove the timing chain from the engine.
* **Timing belt:** Use a wrench to loosen the tensioner pulley and remove the timing belt from the engine.
## Step 6: Lift the Engine Out
Once the timing chain or belt is removed, you can lift the engine out of the car.
* **Attach the engine hoist:** Attach an engine hoist to the engine.
* **Lift the engine out:** Slowly and carefully lift the engine out of the car.
