How to Jack Up a Car Engine
Jacking up a car engine is a relatively simple process that can be performed in a few minutes. However, it is important to take the proper safety precautions and follow the correct steps to avoid any injuries or damage to your vehicle.
Safety Precautions
- Park your car on a level surface.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the wheels that will not be jacked up.
- Wear gloves and safety glasses.
Tools and Materials
- Floor jack
- Jack stands
- Lug wrench
- Wheel chocks
- Gloves
- Safety glasses
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Locate the Jack Points
The jack points are the designated locations on your car’s frame where you can safely place a jack. They are usually located near the wheels, but can vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle. Refer to your owner’s manual for the specific jack points for your car.
2. Position the Floor Jack
Place the floor jack in the center of one of the jack points. Make sure the jack is stable and will not move when you apply pressure.
3. Pump the Floor Jack
Pump the floor jack to raise the car. Continue pumping until the car is high enough to place the jack stands.
4. Place the Jack Stands
Place the jack stands under the car, near the jack points. Make sure the jack stands are stable and will not move when you lower the car.
5. Lower the Floor Jack
Slowly lower the floor jack to transfer the weight of the car to the jack stands.
6. Remove the Floor Jack
Once the car is fully supported by the jack stands, remove the floor jack.
Tips
- If you are not comfortable jacking up your car engine, you can have it done by a mechanic.
- Never work under a car that is supported only by a floor jack.
- Always use jack stands to support the car when you are working under it.
- Inspect the jack and jack stands before each use.
