How to Engine Swap a Car
Step 1: Gather your tools and materials
Before you begin, you’ll need to gather all of the necessary tools and materials. This includes:
- A new engine
- A new transmission (if necessary)
- A new driveshaft (if necessary)
- A new wiring harness (if necessary)
- A new ECM (if necessary)
- A new fuel pump (if necessary)
- A new fuel filter (if necessary)
- A new air filter (if necessary)
- A new oil filter (if necessary)
- A new coolant filter (if necessary)
- A new battery (if necessary)
- A set of wrenches
- A set of sockets
- A set of screwdrivers
- A set of pliers
- A set of hammers
- A set of punches
- A set of chisels
- A set of files
- A set of sandpaper
- A set of paint
- A set of brushes
- A set of rags
- A set of safety glasses
- A set of gloves
Step 2: Remove the old engine
Once you have all of your tools and materials, you can begin removing the old engine. To do this, you will need to:
- Disconnect the battery
- Drain the oil
- Drain the coolant
- Remove the air filter
- Remove the fuel filter
- Remove the spark plugs
- Remove the distributor cap
- Remove the spark plug wires
- Remove the intake manifold
- Remove the exhaust manifold
- Remove the cylinder heads
- Remove the oil pan
- Remove the timing belt
- Remove the water pump
- Remove the alternator
- Remove the power steering pump
- Remove the air conditioning compressor
- Remove the starter
- Remove the transmission
- Remove the driveshaft
- Remove the engine
Step 3: Install the new engine
Once you have removed the old engine, you can begin installing the new engine. To do this, you will need to:
- Place the new engine in the engine bay
- Bolt the engine to the engine mounts
- Install the transmission
- Install the driveshaft
- Install the wiring harness
- Install the ECM
- Install the fuel pump
- Install the fuel filter
- Install the air filter
- Install the oil filter
- Install the coolant filter
- Install the battery
- Connect the battery
- Fill the engine with oil
- Fill the engine with coolant
- Start the engine
Step 4: Test drive the car
Once you have started the engine, you need to test drive the car to make sure that everything is working properly. To do this, you will need to:
- Drive the car around the block
- Accelerate the car to different speeds
- Brake the car to different speeds
- Turn the car to different angles
- Listen for any unusual noises
- Look for any leaks
