How to Check the Engine Oil in Your Car
Checking the engine oil in your car is a quick and easy task that can help you keep your car running smoothly. It’s important to check your oil regularly, especially before long trips or if you’re driving in extreme conditions.
What You’ll Need
- A clean rag or paper towel
- A dipstick
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Park your car on a level surface and turn off the engine. This will allow the oil to settle to the bottom of the oil pan.
- Pop the hood. The hood release lever is usually located under the dashboard on the driver’s side.
- Locate the dipstick. The dipstick is usually located near the front of the engine. It will have a handle and a loop of wire at the end.
- Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean. Use a clean rag or paper towel to wipe off any oil from the dipstick.
- Reinsert the dipstick and pull it out again. The oil level should be between the “min” and “max” marks on the dipstick.
- If the oil level is low, add oil until it reaches the “max” mark. Use the type of oil that is recommended in your car’s owner’s manual.
- Reinsert the dipstick and tighten the cap.
