How to Check a Car Engine Size
Method 1: Check the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
The VIN is a 17-character code that uniquely identifies your car. It can be found in several places on the car, including:
- On the driver’s side door jamb
- On the dashboard, just behind the steering wheel
- On the engine block
Once you have found the VIN, locate the tenth character. This character will indicate the engine size, as follows:
- A = 1.0 liter
- B = 1.1 liters
- C = 1.2 liters
- D = 1.3 liters
- E = 1.4 liters
- F = 1.5 liters
- G = 1.6 liters
- H = 1.7 liters
- I = 1.8 liters
- J = 1.9 liters
- K = 2.0 liters
- L = 2.1 liters

- N = 2.3 liters
- O = 2.4 liters
- P = 2.5 liters
- Q = 2.6 liters
- R = 2.7 liters
- S = 2.8 liters
- T = 2.9 liters
- U = 3.0 liters
- V = 3.1 liters
- W = 3.2 liters
- X = 3.3 liters
- Y = 3.4 liters
- Z = 3.5 liters
Method 2: Check the Owner’s Manual
The owner’s manual will usually contain a section on specifications, which will include the engine size.
Method 3: Check the Engine Block
The engine block is usually located in the front of the car, under the hood. Look for a raised area on the block that has the engine size stamped on it.
Method 4: Use an Online VIN Decoder
There are several websites that offer free VIN decoders. These decoders can provide you with a wealth of information about your car, including the engine size.
