How to Change Rod Bearings with Engine in Car

Introduction

Rod bearings are critical components in an engine, as they allow the crankshaft to rotate smoothly and efficiently. However, over time, these bearings can wear out and need to be replaced. If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, it may be time to change your rod bearings:

  • Knocking or tapping noise from the engine
  • Loss of power
  • Increased oil consumption
  • Low oil pressure

While it is possible to change rod bearings with the engine in the car, it is a complex and time-consuming process. If you’re not mechanically inclined, it’s best to leave this job to a professional mechanic.

Tools and Materials

Before you begin, you will need to gather the following tools and materials:

  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Oil pan
  • New rod bearings
  • New engine oil
  • New oil filter

Safety Precautions

Before you begin working on your car, it is important to take the following safety precautions:

  • Park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Allow the engine to cool completely before beginning work.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Disconnect the battery. This will prevent any electrical shorts from occurring while you’re working on the engine.
  2. Drain the oil. Place the oil pan under the oil pan drain plug and loosen the plug with a socket wrench. Allow the oil to drain completely.
  3. Remove the oil filter. Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the oil filter and remove it by hand.
  4. Remove the oil pan. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts that hold the oil pan in place. Carefully lower the oil pan and set it aside.
  5. Remove the connecting rod caps. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts that hold the connecting rod caps in place. Carefully remove the caps and set them aside.
  6. Remove the rod bearings. Use a small pry bar to carefully remove the rod bearings from the connecting rods and crankshaft journals.
  7. Install the new rod bearings. Apply a thin layer of engine oil to the new rod bearings and install them on the connecting rods and crankshaft journals. Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts that hold the connecting rod caps in place.
  8. Install the oil pan. Carefully lift the oil pan into place and secure it with the bolts. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
