How to Change Engine Oil on Car
Materials You’ll Need
- New engine oil (check your car’s owner’s manual for the recommended type and amount)
- New oil filter
- Oil pan
- Funnel
- Wrench
- Gloves
Safety First
- Park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
- Allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes before starting any work.
- Wear gloves to protect your hands from hot oil.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Locate the Oil Drain Plug
The oil drain plug is typically located on the bottom of the oil pan. It may be covered by a plastic or metal shield. Remove the shield, if necessary, to access the plug.
2. Place the Oil Pan Under the Drain Plug
Position the oil pan directly under the oil drain plug to catch the used oil.
3. Remove the Oil Drain Plug
Use the wrench to carefully loosen the oil drain plug. Be careful not to drop the plug into the oil pan.
4. Allow the Oil to Drain
Allow all of the oil to drain into the oil pan. This may take several minutes.
5. Replace the Oil Drain Plug
Once all of the oil has drained, replace the oil drain plug and tighten it securely using the wrench.
6. Locate the Oil Filter
The oil filter is typically located near the top of the engine. It is a cylindrical-shaped component with a black cap.
7. Remove the Oil Filter
Use the wrench to loosen the oil filter cap. Be careful not to spill any oil. Remove the cap and the old oil filter.
8. Apply a Thin Layer of New Oil to the Gasket of the New Oil Filter
Apply a thin layer of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter. This will help to create a seal and prevent leaks.
9. Install the New Oil Filter
Screw on the new oil filter by hand until it is snug. Do not overtighten the filter.
10. Add New Oil to the Engine
Use the funnel to add the recommended amount of new engine oil to the engine. Check the oil level on the dipstick to ensure that the oil level is between the “min” and “max” marks.
11. Check for Leaks
Start the engine and allow it to run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks around the oil drain plug or oil filter.
12. Reset the Oil Change Indicator Light
If your car has an oil change indicator light, reset it according to the instructions in your owner’s manual.
