How to Change Engine Oil on a Car

Materials You’ll Need

  • New engine oil (check your car’s manual for the recommended type and amount)
  • New oil filter
  • Oil drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Wrench
  • Rags or paper towels

Safety Precautions

  • Park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes before starting to work.
  • Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself from hot oil and fluids.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Locate the Oil Drain Plug

The oil drain plug is typically located on the bottom of the oil pan. It will be a bolt or screw with a washer.

2. Place the Oil Drain Pan

Position the oil drain pan under the oil drain plug. Make sure it is large enough to catch all of the oil that will drain out.

3. Loosen the Oil Drain Plug

Using a wrench, carefully loosen the oil drain plug. Do not remove it completely yet.

4. Drain the Oil

Allow the oil to drain completely into the oil drain pan. This may take a few minutes.

5. Replace the Oil Drain Plug

Once the oil has stopped draining, replace the oil drain plug. Tighten it securely using the wrench.

6. Remove the Old Oil Filter

Locate the oil filter and use a wrench to loosen it. Be careful not to spill any oil.

7. Lubricate the New Oil Filter

Apply a thin layer of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter.

8. Install the New Oil Filter

Screw the new oil filter onto the engine by hand until it is snug. Then, tighten it an additional 3/4 turn using the wrench.

9. Add New Oil

Using a funnel, add the recommended amount of new engine oil to the engine. Check the oil level regularly as you add oil to avoid overfilling.

10. Check the Oil Level

Once you have added the new oil, start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Then, turn off the engine and wait a few minutes for the oil to settle.

Use the dipstick to check the oil level. The oil level should be between the “min” and “max” marks on the dipstick.

11. Reset the Oil Life Monitor (Optional)

Some cars have an oil life monitor that tracks the remaining life of the oil. If your car has this feature, you may need to reset it after changing the oil.

Refer to your car’s manual for specific instructions on how to reset the oil life monitor.

12. Dispose of the Used Oil and Filter

Dispose of the used oil and filter properly. Most auto parts stores will accept used oil and filters for recycling.

  • Change your engine oil regularly according to your car’s maintenance schedule.
  • Use the recommended type and amount of engine oil for your car.
