How to Change Engine Oil in Smart Car
Materials Needed
- New engine oil (check your owner’s manual for the correct type and amount)
- New oil filter
- Oil pan
- Funnel
- Wrench
- Gloves
Safety Precautions
- Park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
- Allow the engine to cool down completely before starting to work.
- Wear gloves to protect your hands from hot oil.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Locate the Oil Drain Plug
The oil drain plug is located on the bottom of the oil pan. It is usually a 17mm bolt.
2. Place the Oil Pan Under the Drain Plug
Place the oil pan under the drain plug to catch the old oil.
3. Remove the Drain Plug
Use a wrench to carefully remove the drain plug. Be careful not to drop the bolt into the oil pan.
4. Allow the Oil to Drain
Allow the oil to drain completely into the oil pan. This may take a few minutes.
5. Replace the Drain Plug
Once the oil has drained, replace the drain plug and tighten it securely.
6. Locate the Oil Filter
The oil filter is located on the side of the engine. It is usually a black canister with a round top.
7. Remove the Oil Filter
Use a wrench to carefully remove the oil filter. Be careful not to spill any oil.
8. Apply a Thin Coat of New Oil to the Gasket of the New Oil Filter
Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter. This will help create a seal and prevent leaks.
9. Screw the New Oil Filter Onto the Engine
Screw the new oil filter onto the engine by hand until it is tight. Do not overtighten the filter.
10. Add New Engine Oil
Use a funnel to add new engine oil to the engine. Add the amount of oil specified in your owner’s manual.
11. Check the Oil Level
Use the dipstick to check the oil level. The oil level should be between the “min” and “max” marks on the dipstick.
12. Start the Engine and Check for Leaks
Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks around the oil drain plug and oil filter. If you see any leaks, stop the engine and tighten the bolts or replace the gaskets.

- Change your engine oil regularly according to your owner’s manual.
- Use the correct type of engine oil for your car.
- Dispose of old engine oil and filters properly.
- If you are not comfortable changing your own engine oil, you can take your car to a mechanic.
