How to Change Engine Oil in a Car
Materials Needed:
- New engine oil (check your car’s manual for the recommended type and amount)
- New oil filter
- Oil drain pan
- Funnel
- Wrench or socket set
- Gloves (optional)
Safety Precautions:
- Park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
- Allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes before starting to work.
- Wear gloves to protect your hands from hot oil.
Steps:
1. Locate the Oil Drain Plug
The oil drain plug is usually located on the bottom of the oil pan. It is typically a 17mm bolt.
2. Place the Oil Drain Pan
Place the oil drain pan under the oil drain plug to catch the used oil.
3. Loosen the Oil Drain Plug
Use a wrench or socket to loosen the oil drain plug. Be careful not to drop the bolt into the oil pan.
4. Allow the Oil to Drain
Allow all of the old oil to drain into the oil drain pan. This may take several minutes.
5. Replace the Oil Drain Plug
Once all of the oil has drained, replace the oil drain plug and tighten it securely.
6. Locate the Oil Filter
The oil filter is usually located near the top of the engine. It is a cylindrical-shaped component with a black cap.
7. Remove the Old Oil Filter
Use an oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the old oil filter. Be careful not to spill any oil.
8. Apply a Thin Layer of New Oil to the Gasket of the New Oil Filter
Apply a thin layer of new oil to the rubber gasket of the new oil filter.
9. Screw on the New Oil Filter
Screw on the new oil filter hand-tight. Do not overtighten.
10. Add New Oil to the Engine
Use a funnel to add the recommended amount of new oil to the engine. Check the oil level on the dipstick and add more oil as needed.
11. Start the Engine and Check for Leaks
Start the engine and allow it to run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks around the oil drain plug or oil filter.
12. Dispose of the Used Oil and Filter Properly
Dispose of the used oil and filter properly at a recycling center.
Tips:
- Change your engine oil and filter regularly according to your car’s maintenance schedule.
- Use high-quality engine oil and oil filter.
