How to Change a Car Engine
Tools and Materials You’ll Need
- New engine

Safety Precautions
- Wear safety glasses and gloves at all times.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal before starting any work.
- Let the engine cool down completely before starting to work on it.
- Use an engine hoist to lift the engine out of the car.
- Be careful not to damage any of the engine components when removing or installing it.
- Tighten all bolts and nuts to the specified torque.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Disconnect the battery. Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a wrench.
- Drain the coolant. Place a coolant drain pan under the radiator and open the drain petcock. Allow the coolant to drain completely.
- Remove the air intake system. Remove the air filter housing and intake manifold using a wrench or socket set.
- Remove the exhaust system. Unbolt the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter using a wrench or socket set.
- Disconnect the fuel lines. Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel injectors using a wrench or socket set.
- Disconnect the electrical connections. Disconnect all electrical connectors from the engine using a screwdriver or pliers.
- Remove the engine mounts. Remove the bolts or nuts that secure the engine mounts to the frame using a wrench or socket set.
- Lift the engine out of the car. Use an engine hoist to lift the engine out of the car. Be careful not to damage any of the engine components.
- Install the new engine. Lower the new engine into the car using an engine hoist. Be careful not to damage any of the engine components.
- Reinstall the engine mounts. Bolt or nut the engine mounts to the frame using a wrench or socket set.
- Reconnect the electrical connections. Reconnect all electrical connectors to the engine using a screwdriver or pliers.
- Reconnect the fuel lines. Reconnect the fuel lines to the fuel injectors using a wrench or socket set.
- Reinstall the exhaust system. Bolt the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter using a wrench or socket set.
- Reinstall the air intake system. Reinstall the air filter housing and intake manifold using a wrench or socket set.
- Fill the engine with coolant. Fill the radiator with coolant until it reaches the full mark.
- Start the engine and check for leaks. Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Check for any leaks from the engine, coolant system, or fuel system.
