How to Determine the Engine Size of a Car

The engine size of a car is an important factor to consider when purchasing or leasing a vehicle. It can affect the car’s performance, fuel efficiency, and towing capacity. There are a few different ways to determine the engine size of a car.

1. Check the Owner’s Manual

The owner’s manual is the best place to find the engine size of a car. It will typically be listed in the specifications section.

2. Look at the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

The VIN is a unique 17-digit code that is assigned to every car. The 10th digit of the VIN indicates the engine size. For example, a VIN with a 10th digit of “4” indicates that the car has a 4-cylinder engine. A VIN with a 10th digit of “6” indicates that the car has a 6-cylinder engine. And so on.

3. Use a VIN Decoder

There are a number of online VIN decoders that can provide you with the engine size of a car. Simply enter the VIN into the decoder and it will return the engine size, along with other information about the car.

4. Measure the Engine Displacement

The engine displacement is the volume of air and fuel that the engine can move in one cycle. It is measured in cubic centimeters (cc). To measure the engine displacement, you will need to remove the spark plugs and insert a piston stop into each cylinder. Then, use a graduated cylinder to measure the amount of fluid that it takes to fill each cylinder. The total amount of fluid will be the engine displacement.

5. Contact the Manufacturer

If you are unable to determine the engine size of a car using any of the methods above, you can contact the manufacturer. They will be able to provide you with the engine size, along with other information about the car.
