How to Get Oil Out of a Car Engine
Changing your car’s oil is a relatively simple task that can be done at home with a few basic tools. However, if you’ve never done it before, it’s important to follow the instructions carefully to avoid making any mistakes.
Safety First
Before you start, it’s important to take a few safety precautions:
- Park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
- Allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes before starting any work.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves to protect yourself from hot oil and chemicals.
Materials You’ll Need
- New oil filter
- New oil (check your owner’s manual for the recommended type and amount)
- Oil drain pan
- Funnel
- Wrench
- Socket set
- Rags
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather Your Materials
Make sure you have all of the materials you need before starting. It’s also a good idea to lay out your tools and materials in a convenient location so you don’t have to run around looking for them later.
2. Prepare the Car
Park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes before starting any work.
3. Locate the Oil Drain Plug
The oil drain plug is usually located on the bottom of the oil pan. It’s typically a 17mm bolt.
4. Place the Drain Pan Under the Oil Drain Plug
Place the oil drain pan under the oil drain plug to catch the used oil.
5. Remove the Oil Drain Plug
Use the wrench to loosen the oil drain plug. Be careful not to overtighten the plug, as this can damage the threads.
6. Allow the Oil to Drain
Allow the oil to drain completely into the drain pan. This may take a few minutes.
7. Replace the Oil Drain Plug
Once the oil has drained, replace the oil drain plug and tighten it securely.
8. Locate the Oil Filter
The oil filter is usually located near the top of the engine. It’s a cylindrical-shaped object with a black cap.
9. Remove the Oil Filter
Use the wrench or socket set to loosen the oil filter. Be careful not to overtighten the filter, as this can damage the threads.
10. Apply a Thin Coat of New Oil to the Gasket of the New Oil Filter
Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter. This will help to create a seal and prevent leaks.
11. Install the New Oil Filter
Screw on the new oil filter by hand until it’s snug. Then, use the wrench or socket set to tighten the filter another 3/4 of a turn.
12. Add New Oil to the Engine
Use the funnel to add new oil to the engine. Add the amount of oil recommended in your owner’s manual.
13. Check the Oil Level
Use the dipstick to check the oil level. The oil level should be between the “min” and “max” marks on the dipstick.
14. Start the Engine and Let It Run for a Few Minutes
Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. This will circulate the new oil throughout the engine.
15. Check for Leaks
Check under the car for any leaks. If you see any leaks, tighten the oil drain plug or oil filter until the leak stops.
Congratulations!
You’ve now successfully changed your car’s oil. Be sure to check the oil level regularly and change the oil and filter according to your owner’s manual’s recommendations.
