Engineer Captains Career Course

Overview

The Engineer Captains Career Course (ECCC) is a six-month, residential course that provides officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to serve as engineer officers in the United States Navy. The course is designed to develop officers’ technical, managerial, and leadership skills in the areas of engineering, damage control, and shipboard operations.

ECCC is open to all officers who have completed the Basic Officer Course (BOC) and have been selected for engineering duty. Officers who successfully complete ECCC will be awarded the designation of Engineer Officer (EO).

Curriculum

The ECCC curriculum is divided into four modules:

1. Engineering Fundamentals This module provides officers with a foundation in engineering principles, including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer. Officers will also learn about the design and operation of marine propulsion systems, auxiliary systems, and damage control systems.
2. Management and Leadership This module provides officers with the skills necessary to manage and lead engineering personnel. Officers will learn about organizational theory, human factors, and project management. They will also develop their skills in communication, decision-making, and problem-solving.
3. Shipboard Operations This module provides officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to operate a ship. Officers will learn about navigation, ship handling, and damage control. They will also develop their skills in watchstanding, shipboard emergencies, and casualty management.
4. Culminating Exercise The culminating exercise is a three-week exercise that provides officers with an opportunity to apply the skills they have learned in the course. Officers will be assigned to a team and will be responsible for the operation of a ship. They will be evaluated on their ability to manage the ship, respond to emergencies, and carry out damage control operations.

Evaluation

Officers are evaluated on their performance in the classroom, on written exams, and on practical exercises. Officers must also complete a research project and present their findings to a panel of instructors.

Officers who successfully complete ECCC will be awarded the designation of Engineer Officer (EO).
