Parts of the Car Engine

Introduction

Pistons and Rings

The pistons are cylindrical-shaped components that move up and down within the cylinders. They are connected to the
crankshaft by connecting rods. The piston rings are metal rings that fit into grooves around the circumference of the
pistons. They seal the gap between the pistons and the cylinder walls, preventing the loss of compression and oil.

Crankshaft

The crankshaft is a rotating shaft that converts the up-and-down motion of the pistons into rotary motion. It is
supported by bearings and is connected to the flywheel, which helps to smooth out the engine’s operation.

Camshaft

The camshaft is a shaft that controls the opening and closing of the valves in the engine. It is driven by the crankshaft
and rotates at half the speed of the crankshaft.

Valves

The valves are located in the cylinder head and control the flow of air and fuel into and out of the combustion chamber.
There are two types of valves: intake valves and exhaust valves. Intake valves allow air and fuel to enter the combustion
chamber, while exhaust valves allow exhaust gases to exit the combustion chamber.

Valve Train

The valve train is the mechanism that opens and closes the valves. It consists of the camshaft, lifters, pushrods, and
rocker arms.

Oil Pump and Filter

The oil pump circulates oil throughout the engine to lubricate the moving parts. The oil filter removes contaminants from
the oil, such as dirt and metal shavings.

Cooling System

The cooling system keeps the engine from overheating. It consists of the radiator, water pump, thermostat, and coolant. The
radiator dissipates heat from the coolant, while the water pump circulates the coolant through the engine. The thermostat
regulates the flow of coolant through the radiator, and the coolant helps to absorb heat from the engine.

Fuel System

The fuel system delivers fuel to the engine. It consists of the fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel injector. The
fuel tank stores the fuel, the fuel pump delivers the fuel to the fuel injector, and the fuel injector sprays the fuel
into the combustion chamber.

Ignition System

The ignition system ignites the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. It consists of the spark plugs, ignition coil,
and distributor. The spark plugs create the spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture, the ignition coil provides the
electricity for the spark plugs, and the distributor distributes the electricity to the spark plugs.
