Car Engine Parts and Functions Diagram

1. Cylinder Head

The cylinder head is the top part of the engine block and it houses the valves, spark plugs, and camshafts. The valves control the flow of air and fuel into and out of the cylinders, while the spark plugs ignite the air-fuel mixture to create power.

2. Cylinder Block

The cylinder block is the main part of the engine and it houses the cylinders, pistons, and crankshaft. The cylinders are where the air-fuel mixture is burned, and the pistons move up and down inside the cylinders to create power.

3. Pistons

The pistons are cylindrical-shaped components that move up and down inside the cylinders. They compress the air-fuel mixture and then force it down into the combustion chamber, where it is ignited by the spark plugs.

4. Crankshaft

The crankshaft is a rotating shaft that is connected to the pistons. As the pistons move up and down, they turn the crankshaft, which in turn drives the wheels of the car.

5. Camshaft

The camshaft is a shaft that controls the opening and closing of the valves. It is driven by the crankshaft and it rotates in time with the crankshaft, so that the valves open and close at the correct times.

6. Oil Pan

The oil pan is a reservoir that holds the oil that lubricates the engine. The oil is pumped from the oil pan to the various parts of the engine, where it reduces friction and wear.

7. Water Pump

The water pump circulates coolant through the engine to keep it cool. The coolant absorbs heat from the engine and then carries it away to the radiator, where it is cooled down and returned to the engine.

8. Alternator

The alternator is a device that generates electricity to power the electrical components of the car, such as the lights, ignition system, and audio system. The alternator is driven by the crankshaft and it produces electricity when the engine is running.

9. Starter Motor

The starter motor is a device that starts the engine. It is powered by the battery and it engages with the flywheel to turn the engine over. Once the engine is running, the starter motor disengages and the engine continues to run on its own.

10. Exhaust System

The exhaust system collects the exhaust gases from the engine and expels them out of the car. The exhaust system consists of the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, and muffler. The exhaust manifold collects the exhaust gases from the engine, the catalytic converter reduces the harmful emissions in the exhaust gases, and the muffler reduces the noise of the exhaust gases.
