What is a Check Engine Light?

The check engine light is a warning light on your car’s dashboard that illuminates when the engine control module (ECM) detects a problem with the engine. The ECM is a computer that monitors the engine’s performance and emissions, and it uses sensors to detect problems such as:

• Ignition system problems
• Exhaust system problems
