4 Engineers Get Into a Car

Four engineers get into a car, and the vehicle immediately starts to move at high speed. Within minutes they are pulled over by a police officer. Astonished, the police officer asks the driver, “Why were you driving so fast?”

The driver replies, “Well, I saw that sign up ahead that said, ‘Fine for speeding: $100’. I didn’t have any change, so I decided that it was probably better to make a quick getaway.”

Engineer #1

The mechanical engineer says, “I saw that sign and calculated that the fine would only be ten cents per kilometer. At this speed, we’ll get to our destination long before we reach the fine amount.”

Engineer #2

The electrical engineer says, “I looked at the sign and observed that it only mentioned a fine for speeding, not a fine for reckless driving. I therefore applied maximum power to the engine.”

Engineer #3

The chemical engineer says, “When I read the sign, I knew that it must be a mistake. After all, everyone knows that speeding fines are typically in the thousands of dollars. I therefore concluded that the decimal point must have been misplaced and that the fine was actually only $1.00.”

Engineer #4

The software engineer says, “When I read the sign, I immediately hit the brakes to avoid the error.”
