Where to Pour Engine Oil in Car
Materials You’ll Need
- New engine oil
- New oil filter
- Oil filter wrench
- Funnel
- Clean rags
- Gloves
- Safety glasses
Safety Precautions
- Park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
- Allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes before starting any work.
- Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself from hot oil and metal.
Locating the Oil Filler Cap
- Open the hood of your car.
- Locate the engine. It’s usually located in the front of the car.
- Look for a black or yellow plastic cap with the word “Oil” or “Engine Oil” written on it.
Pouring the Engine Oil
- Clean the area around the oil filler cap with a clean rag.
- Insert the funnel into the oil filler cap.
- Slowly pour the new engine oil into the funnel.
- Check the oil level on the engine’s dipstick periodically as you pour the oil.
Checking the Oil Level
- Remove the oil dipstick from the engine.
- Wipe the dipstick clean with a clean rag.
- Reinsert the dipstick into the engine.
- Remove the dipstick again and check the oil level.
- The oil level should be between the “min” and “max” marks on the dipstick.
Tightening the Oil Filler Cap
- Once you’ve added enough oil, remove the funnel.
- Tighten the oil filler cap by hand.
Replacing the Oil Filter
- Locate the oil filter. It’s usually a cylindrical-shaped object located near the bottom of the engine.
- Place the oil filter wrench on the oil filter.
- Turn the oil filter wrench counterclockwise to loosen the oil filter.
- Remove the old oil filter and replace it with the new one.
- Tighten the new oil filter by hand, then use the oil filter wrench to tighten it further.
Resetting the Oil Life Monitor
- Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Press and hold the gas pedal and brake pedal simultaneously.
- Turn the ignition on, but do not start the engine.
- Release the gas pedal and brake pedal.
- The oil life monitor should now be reset.
