What to do when car engine won’t start
Check the battery
A dead battery is the most common reason why a car engine won’t start. To check the battery, turn on the headlights. If they’re dim or don’t come on at all, the battery is likely dead. You can try jump-starting the car, or you can replace the battery.
Check the starter
The starter is responsible for turning the engine over. If the starter is bad, the engine won’t be able to start. To check the starter, try tapping it with a hammer. If the engine starts, the starter is likely bad and needs to be replaced.
Check the fuel system
If the battery and starter are both good, the next thing to check is the fuel system. Make sure that there is fuel in the tank, and that the fuel lines are not clogged. You can also try spraying some carburetor cleaner into the carburetor. If the engine starts, the fuel system is likely clogged and needs to be cleaned.
Check the ignition system
The ignition system is responsible for creating the spark that ignites the fuel. If the ignition system is bad, the engine won’t be able to start. To check the ignition system, you can remove a spark plug and hold it against the engine block. If there is a spark, the ignition system is likely good. If there is no spark, the ignition system needs to be repaired or replaced.
Check the timing belt
The timing belt is responsible for synchronizing the timing of the engine. If the timing belt is broken or out of time, the engine won’t be able to start. To check the timing belt, you can remove the timing belt cover and inspect the belt. If the belt is broken or out of time, it needs to be replaced.
If all else fails, call a mechanic
If you’ve checked all of the above and your car still won’t start, it’s time to call a mechanic. A mechanic will be able to diagnose the problem and repair your car.
