Car Won’t Start Service Engine Soon Light
If your car won’t start and the service engine soon light is on, there are a few possible causes. The most common causes are:
- A dead battery. This is the most common cause of a car not starting. If your battery is dead, you will need to jumpstart your car or replace the battery.

How to jumpstart a car
If your car won’t start and you think the battery is dead, you can try to jumpstart it. To jumpstart a car, you will need a pair of jumper cables and another car with a working battery.
- Park the two cars close together, but do not let them touch.
- Turn off the engines of both cars.
- Open the hoods of both cars and locate the batteries.
- Connect one end of the positive (red) jumper cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
- Connect the other end of the positive jumper cable to the positive terminal of the working battery.
- Connect one end of the negative (black) jumper cable to the negative terminal of the dead battery.
- Connect the other end of the negative jumper cable to an unpainted metal surface on the engine of the working car.
- Start the engine of the working car and let it run for a few minutes.
- Try to start the engine of the dead car.
- If the engine of the dead car starts, remove the jumper cables in the reverse order that you connected them.
How to replace a car battery
If your car’s battery is dead and you cannot jumpstart it, you will need to replace the battery. To replace a car battery, you will need a new battery, a wrench, and a pair of gloves.
- Park the car in a safe place and turn off the engine.
- Open the hood of the car and locate the battery.
- Disconnect the negative (black) terminal of the battery by loosening the nut that holds it in place.
- Disconnect the positive (red) terminal of the battery by loosening the nut that holds it in place.
- Remove the old battery from the car.
- Place the new battery in the car.
- Connect the positive (red) terminal of the battery by tightening the nut that holds it in place.
- Connect the negative (black) terminal of the battery by tightening the nut that holds it in place.
- Close the hood of the car and start the engine.
