Parts of the Car Engine
The Engine Block
The engine block is the main structural component of the engine. It houses the cylinders, pistons, crankshaft, and camshaft. The engine block is made of cast iron or aluminum.
The Cylinder Head
The cylinder head is located at the top of the engine block. It houses the valves, spark plugs, and injectors. The cylinder head is made of aluminum or cast iron.
The Pistons
The pistons are located inside the cylinders. They move up and down to compress the air-fuel mixture and create power. The pistons are made of aluminum or steel.
The Crankshaft
The crankshaft is located at the bottom of the engine block. It converts the reciprocating motion of the pistons into rotational motion. The crankshaft is made of forged steel.
The Camshaft
The camshaft is located at the top of the engine block. It controls the opening and closing of the valves. The camshaft is made of cast iron or steel.
The Valves
The valves are located in the cylinder head. They open and close to allow air and fuel to enter the cylinders and exhaust gases to exit. The valves are made of steel.
The Spark Plugs
The spark plugs are located in the cylinder head. They create the spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture. The spark plugs are made of ceramic and metal.
The Injectors
The injectors are located in the cylinder head. They spray fuel into the cylinders. The injectors are made of plastic and metal.
The Oil Pump
The oil pump is located at the bottom of the engine block. It circulates oil throughout the engine to lubricate the moving parts. The oil pump is made of cast iron or aluminum.
The Water Pump
The water pump is located at the front of the engine. It circulates coolant throughout the engine to keep it cool. The water pump is made of cast iron or aluminum.
The Alternator
The alternator is located at the front of the engine. It generates electricity to power the electrical components of the vehicle. The alternator is made of copper and steel.
The Starter
The starter is located at the front of the engine. It cranks the engine to start it. The starter is made of copper and steel.
The Transmission
The transmission is located at the back of the engine. It transfers power from the engine to the wheels. The transmission is made of aluminum or steel.
The Differential
The differential is located at the back of the transmission. It distributes power to the wheels. The differential is made of cast iron or aluminum.
The Driveshaft
The driveshaft is located between the transmission and the differential. It transmits power from the transmission to the differential. The driveshaft is made of steel.
The Axles
The axles are located at the back of the vehicle. They connect the differential to the wheels. The axles are made of steel.
