How to put wheels on a car without an engine

Materials Needed

* Four wheels
* Four lug nuts per wheel
* Lug wrench
* Jack
* Jack stands
* Chocks

Safety Precautions

* Park the car on a flat, stable surface.
* Engage the parking brake.
* Place chocks behind the wheels that will not be removed.
* Never work on a car that is supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. **Jack up the car.** Place the jack near the wheel that you want to remove. Slowly pump the jack to raise the car until there is approximately 6 inches of clearance between the ground and the tire.
2. **Secure the car with jack stands.** Place the jack stands under the car, near the jack points. Slowly lower the car onto the jack stands.
3. **Remove the lug nuts.** Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the wheel that you want to remove. Do not remove the lug nuts completely at this point.
4. **Remove the wheel.** Grip the wheel on both sides and pull it straight towards you. The wheel should come off easily.
5. **Install the new wheel.** Align the new wheel with the wheelbase and lift it into place. Push the wheel onto the wheelbase until it is fully seated.
6. **Tighten the lug nuts.** Use the lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts on the new wheel. Do not overtighten the lug nuts, as this can damage the wheel or the wheelbase.
7. **Lower the car.** Slowly lower the car off of the jack stands.
8. **Remove the jack.** Remove the jack from under the car.
9. **Tighten the lug nuts again.** Use the lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts on the new wheel one more time. This time, tighten the lug nuts as much as possible without overtightening them.
10. **Repeat steps 1-9 for the other three wheels.**

Tips

* If you have a torque wrench, it is a good idea to use it to tighten the lug nuts. The torque specification for your car can be found in the owner’s manual.
* If you are having trouble removing a wheel, you can try using a penetrating oil. Spray the penetrating oil around the lug nuts and let it sit for a few minutes before trying to remove them.
* If you do not have a lug wrench, you can use a socket wrench with the appropriate socket size.
* Be sure to check the tire pressure after you have installed the new wheels.
