Materials You’ll Need

  1. New engine oil
  2. Oil filter
  3. Oil filter wrench
  4. Funnel
  5. Rags

Safety First

Before you start, make sure your car is parked on a level surface and the engine is turned off. Allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes before you begin.

Step 1: Locate the Oil Drain Plug

The oil drain plug is located on the bottom of the oil pan. It is usually a bolt with a washer.

Step 2: Place the Oil Drain Pan Under the Drain Plug

Place the oil drain pan under the drain plug to catch the old oil.

Step 3: Loosen the Oil Drain Plug

Use the oil filter wrench to loosen the drain plug. Be careful not to drop the bolt into the oil pan.

Step 4: Drain the Oil

Allow the oil to drain completely into the oil drain pan. This may take several minutes.

Step 5: Replace the Oil Drain Plug

Once the oil has drained, replace the drain plug and tighten it securely.

Step 6: Locate the Oil Filter

The oil filter is usually located near the top of the engine. It is a cylindrical-shaped canister with a black cap.

Step 7: Remove the Oil Filter

Use the oil filter wrench to loosen the oil filter. Be careful not to puncture the filter.

Step 8: Apply a Thin Coat of Oil to the Gasket of the New Oil Filter

Apply a thin coat of oil to the gasket of the new oil filter. This will help to create a seal and prevent leaks.

Step 9: Install the New Oil Filter

Screw the new oil filter onto the engine by hand until it is snug. Then, use the oil filter wrench to tighten it an additional 3/4 turn.

Step 10: Add New Engine Oil

Use the funnel to add new engine oil to the engine. The amount of oil you need to add will vary depending on your car’s make and model. Refer to your owner’s manual for the specific amount.

Step 11: Check the Oil Level

Once you have added new oil, check the oil level using the dipstick. The oil level should be between the “min” and “max” marks on the dipstick.

Step 12: Start the Engine and Let It Idle

Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. This will allow the oil to circulate throughout the engine.

Step 13: Recheck the Oil Level

After the engine has idled for a few minutes, turn it off and wait a few minutes for the oil to settle. Then, check the oil level again using the dipstick. The oil level should still be between the “min” and “max” marks on the dipstick.

Congratulations! You have now successfully changed the engine oil in your car.
