How to Put an Engine in a Car

Tools You Will Need

  • Engine hoist
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Socket set
  • Wrenches
  • Screwdrivers
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Coolant drain pan
  • Transmission fluid drain pan

Safety Precautions

  1. Park the car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  3. Allow the engine to cool before starting to work.
  4. Wear gloves and safety glasses.

Step 1: Remove the Old Engine

1. Drain the oil and coolant from the engine.
2. Disconnect the battery cables, alternator wires, and starter wires.
3. Remove the air filter and intake manifold.
4. Disconnect the fuel lines and exhaust system.
5. Remove the transmission bolts and separate the transmission from the engine.
6. Attach the engine hoist to the engine.
7. Lift the engine out of the car.

6. Fill the transmission with fluid.

1. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.

3. Drive the car for a few minutes to break in the new engine.
