How to Paint Car Engine Cover
Materials
- Engine cover
- Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
- Masking tape
- Primer
- Paint
- Clear coat
- Tack cloths
Instructions
1. Prepare the engine cover
Remove the engine cover from the car. Clean it thoroughly with soap and water, then dry it completely.
Sand the engine cover with 120-grit sandpaper to remove any rust or corrosion. Then, sand it again with 220-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface.
Wipe the engine cover down with a tack cloth to remove any dust or debris.
2. Mask off the areas you don’t want to paint
Use masking tape to cover any areas of the engine cover that you don’t want to paint, such as the spark plugs, wires, and terminals.
3. Apply primer
Shake the can of primer thoroughly, then hold it about 12 inches away from the engine cover. Apply the primer in thin, even coats, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
4. Apply paint
Shake the can of paint thoroughly, then hold it about 12 inches away from the engine cover. Apply the paint in thin, even coats, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
5. Apply clear coat
Shake the can of clear coat thoroughly, then hold it about 12 inches away from the engine cover. Apply the clear coat in thin, even coats, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
6. Reinstall the engine cover
Once the clear coat has dried completely, you can reinstall the engine cover on the car.
