How to Find Out What Size Engine Your Car Has

1. Check the VIN

Once you have the VIN, you can use it to look up the engine size on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website.

2. Check the Owner’s Manual

The owner’s manual is a great source of information about your car, including the engine size. Look for a section in the manual that lists the car’s specifications.

3. Check the Engine Code

The engine code is a unique identifier that is stamped on the engine block. This code can be used to look up the engine size online or in a car repair manual.

To find the engine code, open the hood of your car and locate the engine block. The engine code will be stamped on a metal plate on the block.

4. Measure the Engine Displacement

If you’re not able to find the engine size using any of the methods above, you can measure it yourself. To do this, you’ll need a measuring tape and a funnel.

Remove the oil cap from the engine.
Insert the funnel into the oil filler hole.
Pour oil into the funnel until it reaches the top of the oil filler hole.

The amount of oil that you poured in is equal to the engine displacement in cubic centimeters (cc). To convert cc to liters, divide by 1000.

5. Ask a Mechanic
