How to Clean My Car Engine Oil

Step 1: Gather your materials

You will need the following materials to clean your car engine oil:

* New engine oil (check your owner’s manual for the recommended type and amount)
* New oil filter
* Oil filter wrench
* Drain pan
* Funnel
* Rags

Step 2: Prepare your car

* Park your car on a level surface.
* Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
* Open the hood and locate the oil dipstick.
* Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag.
* Reinsert the dipstick and pull it out again to check the oil level.
* If the oil level is low, add oil until it reaches the “full” mark on the dipstick.

Step 3: Drain the old oil

* Place the drain pan under the oil pan.
* Use the oil filter wrench to loosen the oil drain plug.
* Allow the oil to drain into the drain pan.
* Once the oil has stopped draining, replace the drain plug and tighten it securely.

Step 4: Replace the oil filter

* Locate the oil filter. It is usually located near the top of the engine.
* Use the oil filter wrench to loosen the oil filter.
* Remove the old oil filter and discard it.
* Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket on the new oil filter.
* Screw the new oil filter onto the engine by hand.
* Tighten the oil filter using the oil filter wrench.

Step 5: Add new oil

* Use the funnel to add new oil to the engine.
* Add oil until the dipstick reads “full.”
* Replace the oil dipstick.

Step 6: Check for leaks

* Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
* Check for leaks under the car. If you see any leaks, stop the engine and tighten the oil drain plug or oil filter.

Step 7: Dispose of the old oil and filter

* Pour the old oil into a sealable container.
* Dispose of the old oil and filter at a recycling center.

Tips

* Change your car’s oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
* Check your car’s oil level regularly, especially before long trips.
* If your car’s oil is dark or dirty, it is time to change it.
* Never dispose of used oil in the trash or down the drain.
