How to Clean a Car’s Engine
Materials You’ll Need
- Engine degreaser
- Garden hose
- Bucket

Instructions
1. Prepare the engine
- Park the car on a level surface and allow the engine to cool completely.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Cover any electrical components, such as the distributor cap and alternator, with plastic bags.
2. Apply the engine degreaser
- Shake the can of engine degreaser well.
- Spray the degreaser liberally over the engine, avoiding any electrical components.
- Allow the degreaser to sit for the amount of time specified on the can.
3. Rinse the engine
- Attach the garden hose to the bucket and fill the bucket with water.
- Gently spray the engine with water, starting from the top and working your way down.
- Use a soft-bristled brush to remove any stubborn dirt or grime.
4. Dry the engine
- Use rags to wipe down the engine and remove any excess water.
- Allow the engine to air dry completely.
5. Reconnect the battery terminal
- Once the engine is dry, reconnect the negative battery terminal.
Tips
- Wear gloves and safety glasses when cleaning the engine.
- Do not use a pressure washer to clean the engine, as this could damage the electrical components.
- If the engine is very dirty, you may need to repeat the cleaning process.
