Materials You’ll Need

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather Your Materials and Prepare Your Car

  1. Gather all of the materials you’ll need.
  2. Park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  3. Allow the engine to cool down for at least 30 minutes.

2. Locate the Oil Drain Plug and Oil Filter

  1. Locate the oil drain plug under the engine. It is usually a 17mm bolt.
  2. Locate the oil filter. It is usually a cylindrical canister located near the top of the engine.

3. Drain the Old Oil

  1. Place the oil drain pan under the oil drain plug.
  2. Use the oil filter wrench to loosen the oil drain plug.
  3. Allow the oil to drain into the oil drain pan.
  4. Once the oil has drained, replace the oil drain plug and tighten it using the oil filter wrench.

4. Replace the Oil Filter

  1. Use the oil filter wrench to loosen the old oil filter.
  2. Apply a thin layer of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter.
  3. Screw on the new oil filter by hand until it is snug.
  4. Use the oil filter wrench to tighten the oil filter an additional 3/4 turn.

5. Add New Oil

  1. Use the funnel to add new oil to the engine. Add the amount of oil specified in your car’s manual.
  2. Use the dipstick to check the oil level. The oil level should be between the “min” and “max” marks on the dipstick.

6. Check for Leaks and Reset the Oil Life Monitor

  1. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
  2. Check for any leaks under the car.
  3. If there are no leaks, turn off the engine and reset the oil life monitor (if your car has one).

Congratulations! You have successfully changed your car’s engine oil.
