How to Change Car Engine Air Filter

The engine air filter is an important part of your car’s engine. It helps to remove dust, dirt, and other contaminants from the air that enters the engine. A clean air filter can improve engine performance and fuel efficiency. If the air filter is clogged, it can restrict airflow to the engine, which can lead to reduced power and fuel efficiency.

Changing the engine air filter is a relatively simple task that can be done in a few minutes. Here are the steps on how to do it:

1. Gather your tools and materials

  • New engine air filter
  • Screwdriver or wrench (depending on the type of air filter housing)
  • Shop rags or paper towels

2. Locate the air filter housing

The air filter housing is usually located in the engine compartment near the engine. It is typically a black or gray box with a lid that is held in place by screws or clips.

3. Remove the lid of the air filter housing

Use a screwdriver or wrench to loosen the screws or clips that hold the lid in place. Carefully lift the lid off of the housing.

4. Remove the old air filter

Carefully remove the old air filter from the housing. Be careful not to drop any dirt or debris into the housing.

5. Inspect the air filter housing

While the old air filter is out, take a moment to inspect the air filter housing for any dirt or debris. If the housing is dirty, use a shop rag or paper towel to clean it out.

6. Install the new air filter

Place the new air filter into the housing. Make sure that the filter is facing the correct direction. The arrow on the filter should point towards the engine.

7. Replace the lid of the air filter housing

Place the lid back on the housing and tighten the screws or clips that hold it in place.

8. Check your work

Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Then, check for any leaks around the air filter housing. If you see any leaks, tighten the screws or clips until the leaks stop.

Tips

  • Change your engine air filter every 12,000 to 15,000 miles or as recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer.
  • If you drive in dusty or dirty conditions, you may need to change your air filter more often.
  • A clean air filter can improve engine performance and fuel efficiency.
