How to Add Engine Oil to Your Car

Materials You’ll Need

  • Engine oil
  • Funnel
  • Oil filter wrench (if changing oil filter)
  • Rags or gloves

Safety First

Before you begin, it’s important to take some safety precautions. Make sure your car is parked on a level surface and that the engine is off and cool. Allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes before starting any work.

Step 1: Locate the Oil Dipstick

The oil dipstick is usually located on the top of the engine. It’s a long, thin metal rod with a loop at the end. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe it clean with a rag.

Step 2: Check the Oil Level

Insert the dipstick back into the engine and pull it out again. The oil level should be between the “min” and “max” marks on the dipstick. If the oil level is low, you’ll need to add more oil.

Step 3: Add Engine Oil

Use a funnel to add oil to the engine. Pour the oil slowly and carefully, checking the oil level on the dipstick as you go. Once the oil level reaches the “max” mark, stop pouring.

Step 4: Replace the Oil Dipstick

Once you’ve added enough oil, replace the oil dipstick. Make sure it’s fully inserted into the engine.

Step 5: Change the Oil Filter (Optional)

If you’re also changing the oil filter, now is the time to do it. Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the old oil filter and remove it. Apply a thin layer of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter and screw it on by hand. Tighten the oil filter with the oil filter wrench, but don’t overtighten it.

Step 6: Check for Leaks

Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Check under the car for any leaks. If you see any leaks, tighten the oil filter or drain plug until the leak stops.

Step 7: Reset the Oil Change Indicator

If your car has an oil change indicator, you’ll need to reset it after you’ve added oil. Consult your owner’s manual for instructions on how to reset the oil change indicator.

Congratulations!

You’ve now successfully added engine oil to your car. By following these simple steps, you can keep your car running smoothly and avoid costly repairs.
