How Does Your Engine Run Cars?

The engine is the heart of your car. It converts the chemical energy in gasoline into mechanical energy that turns the wheels. But how does an engine actually work? Here’s a simplified overview of the four-stroke engine, the most common type of engine found in cars today.

1. Intake Stroke

The intake stroke begins with the piston at the top of the cylinder. The intake valve opens, allowing a mixture of air and fuel to enter the cylinder. The piston then moves down the cylinder, drawing the air and fuel mixture in.

2. Compression Stroke

Once the intake stroke is complete, the intake valve closes and the piston begins to move back up the cylinder. This compresses the air and fuel mixture, making it more combustible.

3. Power Stroke

When the piston reaches the top of the cylinder, the spark plug ignites the air and fuel mixture. This creates a controlled explosion that drives the piston back down the cylinder. The force of the piston moving down turns the crankshaft, which is connected to the wheels.

4. Exhaust Stroke

After the power stroke, the exhaust valve opens and the piston moves back up the cylinder. This forces the exhaust gases out of the cylinder and through the exhaust system.

The four strokes of the engine are repeated continuously, providing the power to turn the wheels and keep your car moving.
