How Combustion Engines Work in Cars

How a Combustion Engine Works

The piston then moves up to compress the fuel and air mixture, which makes it more flammable. When the piston reaches the top of its stroke, the spark plug ignites the fuel and air mixture. The burning fuel and air mixture creates heat, which expands the gases inside the cylinder. The expanding gases push the piston down, which turns the crankshaft.
The exhaust valve opens when the piston reaches the bottom of its stroke to let the exhaust gases out of the cylinder. The piston then moves back up to compress the exhaust gases, which forces them out of the exhaust valve and into the exhaust system.

There are two main types of combustion engines: spark-ignition engines and compression-ignition engines. Spark-ignition engines use a spark plug to ignite the fuel and air mixture, while compression-ignition engines use the heat of compression to ignite the fuel and air mixture.
