The Four Strokes
A car engine works by converting the chemical energy in gasoline into mechanical energy that can be used to power the car. This is done through a series of four strokes:
1. **Intake stroke:** The piston moves down the cylinder, drawing air and fuel into the cylinder through the intake valve.
2. **Compression stroke:** The piston moves up the cylinder, compressing the air and fuel mixture.
3. **Power stroke:** The spark plug ignites the air and fuel mixture, causing it to burn and expand. This expansion forces the piston down the cylinder, generating power.
4. **Exhaust stroke:** The piston moves up the cylinder, pushing the burned gases out of the cylinder through the exhaust valve.
The Valves
The valves are responsible for controlling the flow of air and fuel into and out of the cylinder. The intake valve opens during the intake stroke to allow air and fuel into the cylinder. The exhaust valve opens during the exhaust stroke to allow the burned gases to escape.
The Spark Plugs
The spark plugs are responsible for igniting the air and fuel mixture in the cylinder. They do this by creating a spark that jumps across the gap between the two electrodes.
The Pistons
The pistons are responsible for moving up and down the cylinder, compressing the air and fuel mixture and generating power.
The Crankshaft
The crankshaft is responsible for converting the reciprocating motion of the pistons into rotary motion. It does this by connecting to the pistons via connecting rods.
The Flywheel
The flywheel is responsible for storing energy and smoothing out the engine’s power output. It does this by rotating continuously, absorbing energy during the power stroke and releasing it during the other three strokes.
