The Health Care Engineering Systems Center (HCESC) is a research center at the University of California, Berkeley that focuses on the development and implementation of engineering systems to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of health care delivery.

The HCESC was founded in 2002 by a group of faculty members from the departments of Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, and Industrial Engineering and Operations Research. The center’s mission is to:

  • Develop and implement engineering systems to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of health care delivery.
  • Educate the next generation of health care engineers.
  • Provide a forum for collaboration between engineers, clinicians, and other stakeholders in the health care system.

The HCESC’s research program is focused on four main areas:

  • Health care information systems: The HCESC develops and implements health care information systems to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of health care delivery. These systems include electronic health records, clinical decision support systems, and patient portals.
  • Medical devices: The HCESC develops and tests medical devices to improve the quality and safety of health care. These devices include implantable devices, diagnostic devices, and therapeutic devices.
  • Health care operations: The HCESC develops and implements operational strategies to improve the efficiency of health care delivery. These strategies include process improvement, capacity planning, and supply chain management.
  • Health care policy: The HCESC conducts research on health care policy to inform the development of policies that improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of health care delivery.

The HCESC has a strong educational program that includes undergraduate and graduate courses in health care engineering. The center also offers a Master of Engineering in Health Care Engineering degree program. The HCESC’s educational program is designed to prepare the next generation of health care engineers to develop and implement engineering solutions to the challenges facing the health care system.

The HCESC is a leading research center in the field of health care engineering. The center’s research program has led to the development of new technologies and strategies that have improved the quality, safety, and efficiency of health care delivery. The HCESC’s educational program is preparing the next generation of health care engineers to meet the challenges of the 21st century health care system.
