Different Parts of a Car Engine and Their Functions
1. Cylinder Block
The cylinder block is the main structural component of the engine. It houses the cylinders, which are the combustion chambers. The cylinder block also provides support for the crankshaft, camshaft, and other engine components.
2. Cylinder Head
The cylinder head is located at the top of the cylinder block. It forms the combustion chamber and contains the valves that control the flow of air and fuel into and out of the cylinders.
3. Crankshaft
The crankshaft is a rotating shaft that converts the reciprocating motion of the pistons into rotary motion. The crankshaft is connected to the wheels through the transmission.
4. Camshaft
The camshaft is a rotating shaft that controls the opening and closing of the valves. The camshaft is driven by the crankshaft through a timing belt or chain.
5. Pistons
The pistons are cylindrical components that move up and down within the cylinders. The pistons compress the air and fuel mixture and transfer the force of the combustion gases to the crankshaft.
6. Connecting Rods
The connecting rods connect the pistons to the crankshaft. The connecting rods allow the pistons to move up and down while the crankshaft rotates.
7. Valves
The valves are located in the cylinder head. The valves control the flow of air and fuel into and out of the cylinders. The valves are opened and closed by the camshaft.
8. Spark Plugs
The spark plugs are located in the cylinder head. The spark plugs ignite the air and fuel mixture in the cylinders.
9. Fuel Injectors
The fuel injectors spray fuel into the cylinders. The fuel injectors are controlled by the engine’s computer.
10. Air Filter
The air filter cleans the air that is drawn into the engine. The air filter prevents dirt and other contaminants from entering the engine.
11. Exhaust System
The exhaust system carries the exhaust gases away from the engine. The exhaust system consists of the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, and muffler.
