Classic Car Engine Parts
Engine Block
The engine block is the main structural component of the engine. It houses the cylinders, crankshaft, and other internal components. The engine block is typically made of cast iron or aluminum.
Cylinder Heads
The cylinder heads are located at the top of the engine block and seal the combustion chambers. They contain the valves, spark plugs, and other components necessary for combustion.
Crankshaft
The crankshaft is a rotating shaft that converts the reciprocating motion of the pistons into rotary motion. It is supported by bearings and is connected to the flywheel and the transmission.
Pistons
The pistons are cylindrical-shaped components that move up and down within the cylinders. They are connected to the crankshaft by connecting rods and are responsible for compressing the air-fuel mixture and creating power.
Valves
The valves are located in the cylinder heads and control the flow of air and fuel into and out of the cylinders. They are opened and closed by the camshaft.
Camshaft
The camshaft is a shaft that rotates within the engine block and controls the timing of the valves. It is driven by the crankshaft through a timing belt or chain.
Flywheel
The flywheel is a heavy wheel that is attached to the crankshaft. It stores energy during the power stroke and releases it during the exhaust stroke, helping to smooth out the engine’s operation.
Oil Pump
The oil pump circulates oil throughout the engine to lubricate the moving parts. It is driven by the crankshaft or camshaft.
Water Pump
The water pump circulates coolant throughout the engine to keep it from overheating. It is driven by the crankshaft or camshaft.
Fuel Pump
The fuel pump supplies fuel to the engine. It is typically located in the fuel tank or near the engine.
Air Filter
The air filter cleans the air that enters the engine. It is typically located in the air intake system.
Exhaust System
The exhaust system removes exhaust gases from the engine. It consists of the exhaust manifold, exhaust pipe, and muffler.
Electrical System
The electrical system provides power to the engine’s electrical components, such as the starter, ignition system, and fuel injection system. It consists of the battery, alternator, and wiring harness.
