All Parts of a Car Engine

Engine Block

The engine block is the main structural component of the engine. It contains the cylinders, which are the chambers in which the pistons move. The engine block also contains the crankshaft, which converts the reciprocating motion of the pistons into rotary motion.

Cylinder Head

The cylinder head is located at the top of the engine block. It contains the valves, which control the flow of air and fuel into and out of the cylinders. The cylinder head also contains the spark plugs, which ignite the air-fuel mixture.

Pistons

The pistons are located inside the cylinders. They move up and down, compressing the air-fuel mixture and then expanding it to create power.

Crankshaft

The crankshaft is located at the bottom of the engine block. It is connected to the pistons by connecting rods. The crankshaft converts the reciprocating motion of the pistons into rotary motion.

Camshaft

The camshaft is located at the top of the engine block. It is connected to the crankshaft by a timing belt or chain. The camshaft controls the opening and closing of the valves.

Valve Train

The valve train consists of the valves, valve springs, and camshaft. The valve train controls the flow of air and fuel into and out of the cylinders.

Intake Manifold

The intake manifold is located at the top of the engine. It is connected to the carburetor or fuel injector. The intake manifold distributes the air-fuel mixture to the cylinders.

Exhaust Manifold

The exhaust manifold is located at the bottom of the engine. It is connected to the exhaust system. The exhaust manifold collects the exhaust gases from the cylinders and directs them out of the engine.

Turbocharger

A turbocharger is a device that uses exhaust gases to spin a turbine, which in turn drives a compressor. The compressor then forces more air into the cylinders, increasing the engine’s power.

Supercharger

A supercharger is a device that uses a belt-driven compressor to force more air into the cylinders, increasing the engine’s power.

Oil Pump

The oil pump is located at the bottom of the engine. It circulates oil throughout the engine, lubricating the moving parts.

Water Pump

The water pump is located at the side of the engine. It circulates coolant throughout the engine, keeping it cool.

Fuel Injector

The fuel injector is located at the top of the engine. It sprays fuel into the cylinders, creating the air-fuel mixture.

Carburetor

The carburetor is located at the top of the engine. It mixes air and fuel together, creating the air-fuel mixture.

Ignition Coil

The ignition coil is located at the top of the engine. It creates the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture.

Distributor

The distributor is located at the top of the engine. It distributes the electrical spark to the spark plugs.

Starter Motor

The starter motor is located at the bottom of the engine. It cranks the engine over, starting it.

Alternator

The alternator is located at the side of the engine. It generates electricity, which is used to power the car’s electrical systems.
