Car Won’t Start Says Check Brake System

Car Won’t Start Says Check Brake System

Possible Causes

  • Low brake fluid
  • Faulty brake light switch
  • Problem with the brake system itself

How to Fix

Check the Brake Fluid

  1. Open the hood of your car.
  2. Locate the brake fluid reservoir.
  3. Check the fluid level. It should be between the “MIN” and “MAX” marks on the reservoir.
  4. If the fluid level is low, add more brake fluid. Use the type of brake fluid that is specified in your car’s owner’s manual.

Check the Brake Light Switch

  1. Locate the brake light switch. It is usually located on the brake pedal arm.
  2. Unplug the electrical connector from the brake light switch.
  3. Press the brake pedal. The brake lights should not come on.
  4. If the brake lights do come on, the brake light switch is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Check the Brake System

  1. If the brake fluid is full and the brake light switch is working properly, the problem is likely with the brake system itself.
  2. You will need to take your car to a mechanic to have the brake system inspected and repaired.

Additional Tips

  • If your car won’t start and the “check brake system” message is displayed, do not attempt to drive your car.
  • If you are able to safely stop your car, turn off the engine and put the car in park.
  • Call a tow truck to take your car to a mechanic.
