Parts of a Car Engine
Engine Block
The engine block is the main structural component of the engine. It houses the cylinders, crankshaft, camshaft, and other critical components. The engine block is typically made of cast iron or aluminum.
Cylinder Head
The cylinder head is located at the top of the engine block and seals the combustion chambers. It contains the valves, spark plugs, and injectors. The cylinder head is typically made of aluminum or cast iron.
Pistons
The pistons are located inside the cylinders and move up and down to compress the air-fuel mixture and create power. The pistons are typically made of aluminum or steel.
Crankshaft
The crankshaft is located at the bottom of the engine block and converts the up-and-down motion of the pistons into rotary motion. The crankshaft is typically made of forged steel.
Camshaft
The camshaft is located at the top of the engine block and controls the opening and closing of the valves. The camshaft is typically made of cast iron or steel.
Valves
The valves are located in the cylinder head and control the flow of air and fuel into and out of the cylinders. The valves are typically made of steel or titanium.
Spark Plugs
The spark plugs are located in the cylinder head and create the spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture. The spark plugs are typically made of ceramic or metal.
Injectors
The injectors are located in the cylinder head and spray the air-fuel mixture into the cylinders. The injectors are typically made of metal or plastic.
Oil Pump
The oil pump is located at the bottom of the engine block and circulates oil throughout the engine to lubricate the moving parts. The oil pump is typically made of cast iron or aluminum.
Water Pump
The water pump is located at the front of the engine and circulates coolant throughout the engine to keep it cool. The water pump is typically made of cast iron or aluminum.
Alternator
The alternator is located at the front of the engine and generates electricity to power the electrical components of the vehicle. The alternator is typically made of cast iron or aluminum.
Starter Motor
The starter motor is located at the front of the engine and cranks the engine to start it. The starter motor is typically made of cast iron or aluminum.
