Car Engine Parts Names and Functions
Cylinder Block
The cylinder block is the main structural component of the engine. It houses the cylinders, which are the chambers in which the pistons move up and down. The cylinder block also contains the water jackets, which circulate coolant around the cylinders to keep them cool.
Cylinder Head
The cylinder head is located at the top of the cylinder block and seals the combustion chambers. It contains the valves, which control the flow of air and fuel into and out of the cylinders. The cylinder head also contains the spark plugs, which ignite the air-fuel mixture.
Pistons
The pistons are cylindrical metal pieces that move up and down inside the cylinders. They are connected to the crankshaft by connecting rods. As the crankshaft rotates, the pistons move up and down, compressing the air-fuel mixture and forcing it out of the cylinders.
Connecting Rods
The connecting rods connect the pistons to the crankshaft. They allow the pistons to move up and down while the crankshaft rotates.
Crankshaft
The crankshaft is a rotating metal shaft that converts the up-and-down motion of the pistons into rotational motion. The crankshaft is connected to the wheels of the car through the transmission.
Camshaft
The camshaft is a metal shaft that controls the opening and closing of the valves. The camshaft is driven by the crankshaft through a timing belt or chain.
Valves
The valves are metal plates that control the flow of air and fuel into and out of the cylinders. The valves are opened and closed by the camshaft.
Spark Plugs
The spark plugs are located in the cylinder head and ignite the air-fuel mixture. The spark plugs are connected to the ignition coil, which provides the electrical current necessary to create a spark.
Fuel Injectors
The fuel injectors spray fuel into the cylinders. The fuel injectors are controlled by the engine’s computer.
Air Filter
The air filter cleans the air that enters the engine. The air filter is located in the air intake system.
Exhaust System
The exhaust system removes exhaust gases from the engine. The exhaust system consists of the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, and muffler.
Cooling System
The cooling system keeps the engine cool. The cooling system consists of the radiator, water pump, and thermostat.
Lubrication System
The lubrication system lubricates the moving parts of the engine. The lubrication system consists of the oil pump, oil filter, and oil pan.
