1. Pistons
Pistons are cylindrical-shaped components that move up and down within the cylinders of an engine. They are responsible for converting the reciprocating motion of the crankshaft into the linear motion of the connecting rods. Pistons are typically made of aluminum or cast iron and have a number of rings around their circumference that help to seal the combustion chamber and prevent leakage.
2. Connecting Rods
Connecting rods are the components that connect the pistons to the crankshaft. They are typically made of steel or aluminum and have a bearing at each end that allows them to rotate smoothly on the crankshaft and the piston pin. Connecting rods are responsible for transferring the force of the pistons to the crankshaft, which in turn converts it into rotational motion.
3. Crankshaft
The crankshaft is the main rotating component of an engine. It is typically made of steel or cast iron and has a number of journals (bearing surfaces) that allow it to rotate smoothly within the engine block. The crankshaft is connected to the connecting rods by the crankpins, which are offset from the journals. As the pistons move up and down, they rotate the crankshaft, which in turn drives the transmission and other components of the engine.
4. Camshaft
The camshaft is a rotating component that controls the timing of the valves in an engine. It is typically made of steel or cast iron and has a number of lobes (raised sections) that correspond to the different valves in the engine. As the camshaft rotates, the lobes push on the valve lifters, which in turn open the valves. The camshaft is driven by the crankshaft through a timing belt or chain.
5. Valves
Valves are components that control the flow of air and fuel into and out of the cylinders of an engine. They are typically made of steel or titanium and have a mushroom-shaped head that seals against the valve seat. Valves are opened and closed by the camshaft through the valve lifters.
6. Cylinder Head
The cylinder head is the component that covers the top of the cylinders in an engine. It is typically made of aluminum or cast iron and has a number of ports that allow for the flow of air, fuel, and exhaust gases. The cylinder head also contains the valves and valve seats.
7. Engine Block
The engine block is the main structural component of an engine. It is typically made of cast iron or aluminum and houses the cylinders, crankshaft, and other internal components. The engine block also provides mounting points for the cylinder head, intake manifold, and exhaust manifold.
