Car Engine Construction

Engine Block

The engine block is the main structural component of an engine. It houses the cylinders, crankshaft, camshaft, and other essential components. The engine block is typically made of cast iron or aluminum.

Cylinder Head

The cylinder head is located at the top of the engine block. It houses the valves, spark plugs, and other components that control the flow of air and fuel into and out of the cylinders.

Pistons

The pistons are cylindrical-shaped components that move up and down inside the cylinders. They are connected to the crankshaft by connecting rods.

Crankshaft

The crankshaft is a rotating shaft that converts the reciprocating motion of the pistons into rotary motion. The crankshaft is connected to the flywheel, which stores energy and helps to smooth out the engine’s operation.

Camshaft

The camshaft is a shaft that controls the opening and closing of the valves. The camshaft is driven by the crankshaft.

Valves

The valves are located in the cylinder head and control the flow of air and fuel into and out of the cylinders. The valves are opened and closed by the camshaft.

Spark Plugs

The spark plugs are located in the cylinder head and provide the spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in the cylinders.

Flywheel

The flywheel is a heavy wheel that is connected to the crankshaft. The flywheel stores energy and helps to smooth out the engine’s operation.

Oil Pump

The oil pump circulates oil throughout the engine to lubricate the moving parts.

Water Pump

The water pump circulates coolant throughout the engine to keep it cool.

Fuel Injector

The fuel injector sprays fuel into the cylinders.

Intake Manifold

The intake manifold is a passageway that carries air from the air filter to the cylinders.

Exhaust Manifold

The exhaust manifold is a passageway that carries exhaust gases from the cylinders to the catalytic converter.

Turbocharger

A turbocharger is a device that uses exhaust gases to spin a turbine, which in turn compresses air and forces it into the cylinders. Turbochargers can improve engine performance by increasing power and torque.

Supercharger

A supercharger is a device that uses a belt or chain to drive a compressor, which in turn compresses air and forces it into the cylinders. Superchargers can improve engine performance by increasing power and torque.
