Car Engine Labeled
Engine Block
The engine block is the main part of the engine. It houses the cylinders, pistons, and crankshaft. The cylinders are where the fuel is burned, and the pistons are what move up and down to create power. The crankshaft is what converts the up-and-down motion of the pistons into rotary motion.
Cylinder Head
The cylinder head is located at the top of the engine block. It contains the valves that control the flow of air and fuel into and out of the cylinders. The valves are opened and closed by the camshaft.
Camshaft
The camshaft is located in the cylinder head. It is responsible for opening and closing the valves. The camshaft is driven by the crankshaft.
Crankshaft
The crankshaft is located at the bottom of the engine block. It is responsible for converting the up-and-down motion of the pistons into rotary motion. The crankshaft is connected to the transmission, which then transfers power to the wheels.
Connecting Rods
The connecting rods connect the pistons to the crankshaft. They allow the pistons to move up and down while still being connected to the crankshaft.
Pistons
The pistons are located inside the cylinders. They are what move up and down to create power. The pistons are connected to the connecting rods, which then transfer power to the crankshaft.
Valves
The valves are located in the cylinder head. They control the flow of air and fuel into and out of the cylinders. The valves are opened and closed by the camshaft.
Intake Manifold
The intake manifold is located on the side of the engine. It is responsible for bringing air into the cylinders. The intake manifold is connected to the carburetor or fuel injector.
Exhaust Manifold
The exhaust manifold is located on the side of the engine. It is responsible for carrying exhaust gases away from the cylinders. The exhaust manifold is connected to the muffler.
Oil Pan
The oil pan is located at the bottom of the engine. It is responsible for storing oil. The oil pan is connected to the oil pump, which then circulates oil throughout the engine.
Water Pump
The water pump is located on the side of the engine. It is responsible for circulating coolant through the engine. The coolant helps to keep the engine cool.
Fuel Pump
The fuel pump is located on the side of the engine. It is responsible for pumping fuel from the fuel tank to the carburetor or fuel injector.
Starter Motor
The starter motor is located on the side of the engine. It is responsible for starting the engine. The starter motor is connected to the battery.
Alternator
The alternator is located on the side of the engine. It is responsible for charging the battery. The alternator is driven by the crankshaft.
Power Steering Pump
The power steering pump is located on the side of the engine. It is responsible for providing power to the power steering system. The power steering pump is driven by the crankshaft.
Air Conditioning Compressor
The air conditioning compressor is located on the side of the engine. It is responsible for providing power to the air conditioning system. The air conditioning compressor is driven by the crankshaft.
